To infinity, and beyond: Cinema box office smashes a fifth straight $100m month, hits biggest August ever.
Sydney, Australia – Cinema is in the middle of a blockbuster run for the ages. The Australian box office has just smashed through a record that's never been hit before – five consecutive months of $100 million-plus takings – with August delivering $123 million at the box office, officially the highest-grossing August of all time.
That huge August has also pushed cinema past another milestone. Combined with June and July, the box office delivered $355 million across the winter period – overtaking 2019's total to make it the biggest winter at the Australian box office on record, and proof that cinema's record-breaking run is no one-off.
Driving it all has been the sheer dominance of this year's blockbusters. Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn't just breaking records locally – it's now the 2nd fastest film in history to cross $2 billion globally, and the highest-grossing film released anywhere since Barbie in 2023. Locally, it's crossed $81 million at the Australian box office – the first film since Barbie to hit the $80 million mark – and is on track to overtake its predecessor No Way Home next week to become the 7th highest-grossing title of all time in Australia.
The Odyssey's successful holdover has kept pace, crossing $60 million to sit as the 12th biggest title of all time in Australia. It's a rare moment of two blockbusters running side by side at this scale, and momentum shows no signs of letting up. Year-to-date admissions are now up 21% versus the same time last year.
Guy Burbidge, Managing Director of Val Morgan Cinema, said, "Five straight months of $100 million-plus box office has never happened before in this market, and now the biggest winter on record on top of that – it tells you exactly where audience appetite is right now."
Burbidge added, "The numbers are clear – cinema is the place for brands to show up right now. And momentum isn't slowing down – September school holidays are just weeks away where we typically see a roughly 40% lift in admissions. That's all while the industry builds toward what's shaping up as a landmark day on 17 December, when Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three share a release date."
