The 2026 Oscars: Hollywood’s night of nights delivers historic wins.

The 98th Academy Awards, Hollywood’s night of nights, delivered historic wins, milestone achievements and climactic moments in some of the award season’s most competitive races.

One of the most notable moments of the evening was the recognition for the horror genre, with Sinners taking home several awards. Among them was Best Original Score, awarded to Ludwig Göransson, marking his third Oscar after previous wins for Black Panther and Oppenheimer.

That recognition extended to the acting categories, with Amy Madigan winning Best Supporting Actress for Weapons. The Supporting Actress category had long been considered a three-way race between Madigan, Teyana Taylor and Wunmi Mosaku throughout awards season, but Madigan’s chilling portrayal of Aunty Gladys ultimately won her the statue. The victory marks a significant moment for horror, a genre the Academy has historically been reluctant to reward in major categories.

The ceremony also delivered a rare Oscars moment, with the first tie in 13 years. In the Best Live Action Short Film category, both The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva were awarded the Oscar, marking just the seventh tie in Academy Awards history.

Several historic milestones were also set throughout the night. Autumn Durald Arkapaw won Best Cinematography for Sinners, becoming the first woman and first woman of colour to receive the award.

In the acting races, Michael B. Jordan secured Best Actor for Sinners, following one of the tightest competitions of the season, while Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for Hamnet, becoming the first Irish actress to take home the award.

The evening’s biggest honour went to Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which claimed Best Picture after entering the ceremony with 13 nominations. Anderson also won Best Director for the film, capping off a major night for the project and its star-studded cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio.
